Mario History: Super Mario 3D World - 2013

NL:
We have a fond story we like to recall about Super Mario 3D World in Nintendo Life HQ. It was E3 2013, Nintendo opted for a Nintendo Direct broadcast rather than a press briefing - this was before the first excellent 'Digital Event', remember - and there was a feeling of nervousness. Nintendo had basically already announced a few big games that would be shown, including a new '3D Mario'. Trouble was Nintendo was using the awful uStream during E3 - or Twitch was terrible at the time, one or the other - and we were watching in 240p despite having a connection speed to make most people weep in admiration. Super Mario 3D World then popped up.

I remember very clearly going to Toys'R'Us to play the demo kiosk for Super Mario 64. Like any good Nintendo tyke, I had a subscription to Nintendo Power and had been following the development of the "Ultra 64" with bated breath. Thinking about the promising capabilities of the N64 Disk Drive filled me with anticipation for the upcoming era of gaming. And that crazy controller? I had to try it.

NL:
Super Mario 3D Land wasn't the first 3D Mario to grace a Nintendo portable - that honour goes to Super Mario 64 DS - but it was the first original game of its type.
Before we talk a little about the game, the context of its release is important. Within a few months of the 3DS launching in Spring 2011 Nintendo was forced to react to a dramatic decline in sales, with one measure being a Fall 2011 price cut relatively unprecedented in terms of how quickly it was implemented. While the price cut is credited as providing a major kickstart in boosting the 3DS in the marketplace, late 2011 delivered key blockbusters. Monster Hunter 3 G in Japan, with Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land providing a boost worldwise. It was an impressive Holiday line-up that helped salvage the portable's market position.

NL:
I'm not sure of my exact age at the time, but toward the end of the '80s my dad moved a 13" television into my bedroom and with it came our NES. Since he hadn't yet beat Super Mario Bros. 2 he'd hang out in my room every now and again trying to beat it. As much as I loved playing video games, I had no problem sitting back and watching someone else play. In fact, I genuinely enjoyed participating as a spectator. Not having to worry about jumping around and franticly avoiding enemies meant I could sit back and soak in the spectacle, which allowed me to closely analyze and observe the finer visual details. I found video game worlds so magical and fascinating, and Super Mario Bros. 2 was one of the weirdest and most visually compelling games I'd seen at that point in my life. It wasn't until Mr. Thomas Whitehead reached out to me about contributing to this series that I realized the lifelong impact that the (SPOILER ALERT) dream-induced world of Subcon had on me.
